Artist's Statement
Painting and drawing have always been an outlet for me; a way of processing feelings and events and grounding myself in the present. The work is a distillation of what I'm feeling over a period of time, or the imprint of sorting out a mixture of emotions. I want the emotions to come through, for people to be able to relate or be able to reflect their own feelings off of the work. Images can hold complexity and contradictions together, perceived as one image or emblem, in a way that can be difficult with words.
Part of what interests me the most is the evolution of the work, and guiding the piece to mirror the way our feelings change over time. I notice how I am reacting to piece as I'm working, letting those reactions alter the progression of the piece in a cyclical way. I don't like to plan out what I'm doing too well, but start with an initial idea and some reference to form the basic structure of a painting or mixed media. Once that foundation is laid I work more intuitively and allow the work to evolve as I respond to it.
